Facts and Figures
The Prince has launched a project to help save the World's rainforests
Rainforests are a perfect home for frogs – there is lots of water, plenty of bugs to eat and millions of hiding places.
The Rainforest is the home of the Argentine Horned Frog, otherwise known as the Argentine wide-mouthed Frog. It lives mainly in the Rainforests of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.
The females can grow up to 14 centimetres long and the males up to 10 centimetres long. They can live to the ripe old age of 10.
These frogs will attempt to swallow anything which moves, no matter how big – even if it might mean they would suffocate in the process. They eat insects, small birds and mammals, lizards and other frogs.
These frogs are well known for their fearless reputation. If they feel threatened by a larger animal they are capable of delivering a nasty painful bite, as they have lots of very sharp teeth along their bottom jaw. They will also jump towards their attacker, no matter their size and power.
Frogs are known as an “indicator species”. This is because their general health tells us a lot about their surroundings. As they breathe through their skin, which is covered in lots of tiny holes, if the air or water where the frogs live is polluted, they will get ill.
If the destruction of the Rainforests continues some of the world’s most amazing creatures, such as the Argentine Horned Frog, could disappear.
