The Duchess adopts the word 'grandmother' in aid of a children's charity
11th March 2010
The Duchess of Cornwall has marked Mother’s Day by adopting the word "Grandmother" in aid of a children’s charity.
The charity, I CAN, which helps children communicate, has launched its Adopt a Word scheme with support from well-known people including Stephen Fry and Sir Paul McCartney.
I CAN aims to ensure that no child is left out or left behind because of a difficulty speaking or understanding.
Her Royal Highness, who has five grandchildren, said she bought the word ‘grandmother “because of the joy it brings her”.
Her Royal Highness, who takes a keen interest in literacy and recently marked World Book Day by reading to children, has demonstrated her support of I CAN’s work by adopting three other words including ‘talk’, ‘reading’ and ‘learn’.
The Adopt a Word scheme has been endorsed by other well-known faces including ‘indefatigable’ word champion Stephen Fry, ‘consummate song-smith’ Sir Paul McCartney, the ‘loquacious’ Graham Norton and many more.
