The Prince of Wales becomes President of WWF-UK

8th September 2011

The Prince of Wales has been an environmental leader for many years, and in that time has been involved in a number of projects and initiatives to help protect the planet and its wildlife.

Today, His Royal Highness became President of WWF-UK, a role which The Prince’s father, The Duke of Edinburgh held when the WWF was established 50 years ago. The Duke is now President Emeritus of WWF International.

2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the charity and sees Princess Alexandra, The Hon Lady Ogilvy step down as President, a role she has held for the past 29 years.

During an event held at St. James’s Palace, attended by Princess Alexandra and WWF supporters, The Prince gave a keynote speech to mark the 20th anniversary of the Global Forest & Trade Network. The GFTN is an initiative by the WWF which aims to improve responsible management of the world’s forests.

His Royal Highness has a keen interest in preserving global rainforests, and in 2007 launched The Prince’s Rainforests Projects, with the aim of finding practical solutions to slow tropical deforestation and climate change.

The project is now part of International Sustainability Unit, established by The Prince, which works to develop durable solutions to meet the challenges of climate change and the depletion of natural resources.
