HRH displays First Aid skills at Sandringham

27th July 2010

The Prince of Wales demonstrated his first aid resuscitation skills to a number of St. John Ambulance cadets during a visit to the 129th Sandringham Flower Show today.

The Prince and The Duchess met with the young volunteers as they toured the Sandringham Show at The Queen’s Norfolk estate.

His Royal Highness, who already holds a First Aid certificate, performed the procedure on a dummy model called “Resusci Anne”, while the nursery rhyme “Nelly the Elephant” played, and told the volunteers that he was going to renew his certificate.

St. John Ambulance Norfolk Cadet of the Year Alicha Palmer, 15, said: “The Prince had a go, it was brilliant – and he was singing Nelly the Elephant.

“He was doing the compressions correctly because he was making the chest click, which tells you the pressure is right.”

Their Royal Highnesses spent an hour chatting with many members of the public as they toured the Show. They were joined by a number of celebrity guests including actresses Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith, along with playwright Sir Tom Stoppard.

The Prince and The Duchess, who are both keen gardeners themselves, found time to shop for new plants and flowers as they toured the marquees and presented trophies to the owners of prize-winning exhibits.

His Royal Highness ordered some pinks – a flower representing a small carnation – when he visited the stall of Emma James and her husband David, both flower producers from Hassocks, West Sussex.

Mrs James said: “The Prince said 'I love your pinks and I love that particular colour'."
