HRH launches sustainable projects in Carmarthen as part of START tour
6th September 2010
The Prince of Wales visited Carmarthen to launch a number of sustainability projects at the National Botanic Garden of Wales as part of the START tour.
The Prince, who is Patron of the National Botanic Garden of Wales, launched the Size of Wales Rainforest Initiative, The Prince’s Regeneration Trust’s Green Guide for Historic Buildings and the Carmarthenshire Community Challenge at the START Wales Festival.
The new rainforest initiative, launched in The Great Glasshouse at the festival, is a unique national scheme to sustain an area of rainforest in Africa the size of Wales – two million hectares.
It aims to fund Welsh organisations, companies and individuals to make long lasting links which will benefit both communities.
The Prince met with many members of the local community who have been involved in sustainability initiatives, as well as craftsmen and exhibitors before he officially launched the Carmarthenshire Community Challenge.
In a speech, The Prince said: "Put simply we are, right now, causing serious damage to our own and, more importantly, our children and grand children's, support system.
"It seems to me, for far far too long all the talk about the environment has been about stopping people from doing things.
"Far too rarely did you hear about the positive stories which emerged from attempting environmental strategies.
"Ladies and gentlemen, if we get it right we will leave a legacy for future generations of a sustainable environment.
"But we will never achieve what we need to unless we make a start."
