HRH presents The Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy to supporters of the arts

24th November 2009

The Prince of Wales presented supporters of the arts with an award at Clarence House today.

The Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy celebrates individuals who support the arts.

The Prince said: "The role of philanthropists, as you know far better than I, is of ever greater importance.

"All of us have seen the devastating effect of the recession on economies across the world.

"The support of the private sector and, in particular, individual philanthropists, is essential in order to sustain many activities that could otherwise be severely damaged by the financial crisis."

He added: "I believe it is of the utmost importance to thank and celebrate the remarkable generosity of people who are contributing to sustain the lifeblood of our cultural and artistic life."

Among those receiving the awards were Donald and Louise MacDonald, who were recognised for supporting Scottish arts and culture.

The couple, who are based in Edinburgh, have given financial support to organisations such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Eight years ago, they funded a small series of chamber concerts by the SCO in the East Neuk of Fife which has now grown into an independent chamber music festival

Mr MacDonald, who founded businesses such as the City Inn chain, said: "My love of music began at 11 when I started playing the fiddle and it has never waned, due to my involvement with the wonderful organisations we assist."

Soap magnate Sir John Zochonis was awarded the medal in recognition of his support for the North West.

He has donated to, among others, Chethams School of Music in Manchester, the Clonter Opera, Buxton Festival, Manchester International Festival, Manchester Art Gallery, The Lowry Centre and the Northern Chamber Orchestra.

Sir John, who ran the cosmetics firm PZ Cussons, said: "I feel enormously honoured to receive this totally unexpected award."

Fashion designer Jasper Conran was among the guests at the reception.
