HRH visits soldiers from his regiments before their deployment to Afghanistan

18th February 2010

The Prince of Wales today visited three of his regiments ahead of their deployment to Afghanistan.

His Royal Highness, who was dressed in fatigues, was visiting the Royal Dragoon Guards along with the Mercian Regiment and 9 Army Air Corps as their Colonel-in-Chief.

A soldier spoke of his pride today after receiving a bravery award from The Prince during his visit.

Sergeant Luke Cunningham, 29, received a Certificate of Commendation from The Prince as he visited soldiers and their families at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.

Sgt Cunningham, from Leeds, came under small arms fire as he came to aid of a Gurkha platoon in Helmand, Afghanistan, in March 2009.

The citation praised the soldier's "selfless and gallant" actions under fire and for placing himself in "enormous danger" as he saved three colleagues and gave first aid to an injured comrade.

Sgt Cunningham received the certificate in the Officers' Mess of the Royal Dragoon Guards during a visit by The Prince this morning.

Sgt Cunningham, who was attached to The Queen's Dragoon Guards at the time of his bravery, said: "It means everything to me. It's a huge privilege.

“There were a lot of ups and downs on that tour and I lost a few mates. This is a recognition of all their efforts.

"It's not just me, it's all the other guys.

"I have my father here today. It means a lot to me, this."

Asked what The Prince of Wales said to him, he added: "He said Leeds breeds a lot of hard men and I concurred."

During this morning's visit The Prince chatted to many soldiers and their families over a cup of tea.

Later, His Royal Highness attended a pre-deployment party hosted by the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire).

The Prince chatted to soldiers and their families who had gathered in a large hanger located at Marne Barracks, close to the A1 in North Yorkshire.

A number of information stands had been placed in the hall giving families a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers while on deployment for six months.

One included the Army Welfare Service, which provides information to loved ones back at home, giving them tips and advice on how to stay in touch and stay safe.

A bouncy castle, a magician and a number of food stalls were provided to keep youngsters occupied while The Prince toured the hanger looking at various stands and military hardware on display.
