Prince William presents the RBS 6 Nations trophy to the Welsh Rugby team as Royal Vice-Patron

15th March 2008

Prince William presented the RBS Six Nations trophy to the Welsh Rugby team today as their Vice Royal Patron.

A record crowd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff saw Wales triumph against the French and win the Grand Slam, remaining unbeaten in all six matches in the tournament.

Wales beat France by 29 points to 12, securing Wales's 10th Grand Slam, 100 years after they won their first.

Prince William, who is Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, cheered the team on to their victory against France before handing them the silverware in jubilant scenes at the Cardiff stadium.

The Prince was given a WRU Triple Crown tie before the match to commemorate their win against Ireland last week, and commented "good tie" - but prophetically said he would only wear it for one match before a Grand Slam tie was produced.

The Prince of Wales had sent the team a message of good luck before the final game.

Prince William chatted to First Minister Rhodri Morgan and French Sport Secretary Bernard Laporte over a cup of tea and a Welsh cake during half time, and said Gavin Henson's sin binning was "a bit harsh".

The stadium recorded its biggest yet attendance of 74,609 - many wearing daffodils, waving blow-up daffodils and even dressed as daffodils. The crowd erupted as Captain Ryan Jones raised the trophy, and fireworks were set off.

After the match, the crowd poured out into the heavy rain, heading for the city's pubs which soon had queues stretching down the streets.
