The Duchess celebrates British Food Fortnight and meets fathers learning to cook
25th June 2009
The Duchess of Cornwall launched British Food Fortnight's 2009 educational activities today when she opened a children's centre and met fathers learning to cook.
Her Royal Highness opened the Compass Children's Centre in Gloucester where the organisers of British Food Fortnight had teamed up with celebrity chef Rob Rees's charity, The Wiggly Worm, to give a cooking lesson to fathers.
The lesson was one of a number being conducted at the centre in preparation for a "Family Feast of British Food" when parents will cook a British meal for all the families.
The Duchess joined six fathers to see them learning how to make shepherd's pie, apple and rhubarb cobbler, marinated berries and soda bread.
As well as cooking lessons, the fathers will be taken on shopping tours during the build-up to the national food promotion to help them find more healthy and more British food in their local shops. Kirk Goddard, father to nine children, started to cook three weeks ago.
He said: "This is the first time I've ever met anyone famous so it was a huge excitement to my whole family.
"I want to get into cooking so I can help at home rather than my fiancée doing all the work.
"I've never been one to stand over a hot stove but this has inspired me to get into it and now I love it."
