The Duchess of Cornwall meets competition winners of the British Food Fortnight Secondary Schools Competition

The Duchess of Cornwall meets winners of the British Food Fortnight Competition

27th January 2011

Winners of the British Food Fortnight Secondary School Competition met The Duchess of Cornwall today, after preparing a lunch for Her Royal Highness with the help of celebrity chefs the Hairy Bikers in the Clarence House kitchens.

The schoolchildren, from Greencroft School in Durham and Northfield Academy in Aberdeen, created a menu that reflects recipes that would have been cooked in their school’s region by previous generations.

The menu highlighted the best of British produce, and included such delights as homemade cheese scones, cock-a-leekie soup, rabbit pie and cranachan for dessert.

British Food Fortnight, which is now in its 10th year, aims to encourage consumers to "Buy British" as part of a national celebration of British food.

While some of the competition winners were busy cooking in the kitchen, others laid the table guided by Clarence House staff.

The table was decorated with seasonal flowers from the UK including tulips and snowdrops, and napkins laid out in the shape of The Prince of Wales’s feathers.

Speaking just before The Duchess arrived, some of the schoolchildren said they were “honoured” to be cooking for royalty.

Their Royal Highnesses are strong supporters of the British food industry, and The Duchess has been involved with British Food Fortnight for a number of years, making a speech during its launch last year.

At the time, Founder of British Food Fortnight Alexia Robinson, described The Duchess as "the Fairy Godmother" of the event.

As Her Royal Highness arrived, she spoke with the competition winners before she was joined by guests for the lunch.
