23rd June 2011
The Prince of Wales attended ‘The Prince’s Charities in Wales Race Day’ today, at Ffos Las Racecourse.
The race day was a charity event for the charities His Royal Highness is President of.
On arrival, The Prince toured the racecourse, meeting Welsh racehorse trainers and visiting an exhibition of the work of The Prince’s charities in Wales.
It is the first time that the racecourse, which occupies the former site of the largest open cast coalmine in Europe, has staged a race day to help raise funds for The Prince’s Charities in Wales
The Prince expressed his admiration for what has been done to transform the sprawling former coal site.
"It's fantastic to have royalty come here and highlight to the world what a wonderful course this is," said Arwyn Morgan, Ffos Las head groundsman..
During the visit, His Royal Highness planted a commemorative tree, grown on the Duchy of Cornwall estate, as part of the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods project.
After watching the races, The Prince made presentations to the winning racehorse owners.
