The Prince of Wales celebrates Kuwait's independence on day two of the Autumn Tour
1st November 2011
The Prince of Wales was greeted with a warm welcome in Kuwait today, during a busy day of engagements celebrating the country's independence.
His Royal Highness was visiting Kuwait at the request of the British Government, and the visit came at a very special time for the country, which had a huge day of celebrations as it saw in the 50th anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom, and 20 years since its liberation from Iraq.
There is a strong historic relationship between the UK and Kuwait, and The Prince joined Kuwaitis in commemorating the sacrifice made by British and Kuwaiti troops in the conflict with Iraq in 1991.
The day started with a visit to MEED, meeting British business people who work in Kuwait. His Royal Highness was accompanied by the British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, Alastair Burt throughout the visit.
Visiting the Bayan Palace next, The Prince was welcomed by the scarlet tunics of the Welsh Guards, of which he is Colonel, to celebrate Kuwaiti and British Armed Forces during a lively military parade.
The busy day of engagements saw The Prince attend a State Lunch held in his honour, before heading to the British Embassy where a large crowd of the British community in Kuwait had turned up to meet His Royal Highness during the garden party.
Arriving at the embassy, the Welsh guards and a huge crowd of school children lined the route.
Leaving Kuwait, The Prince boarded a plane straight to Doha, Qatar.
Tomorrow, The Prince will be heading to South Africa, where he will be joined by The Duchess of Cornwall to continue the tour.
