TRH arrive in Uganda to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
22nd November 2007
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall arrived in Uganda tonight ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be opened tomorrow by Her Majesty The Queen.
The arrival of Their Royal Highnesses marked the start of a three-day visit to the east African country during which The Prince will visit aid projects at a slum before attending a series of functions at the leaders' meeting. After visiting Uganda, Their Royal Highnesses will visit Turkey.
It is the first time The Prince of Wales has been present at an overseas CHOGM, which is attended by the leaders of more than 50 countries.
Upon arrival at the airport, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were greeted by Ugandan Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi and African dancers in traditional dress, accompanied by a band of drummers.
The Duchess was given a bouquet of flowers from a young girl before the royal party left for the capital Kampala.
During the visit, The Prince will see a number of charity-backed aid projects around the country.
Tomorrow The Prince will visit a centre for former sex workers and other initiatives at a slum on the outskirts of the capital.
Their Royal Highnesses will later join The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh at a Queen's Banquet held in honour of the 53 represented nations at CHOGM.
The Prince is also expected to meet with President Museveni of Uganda.
