The Prince and The Duchess meet Canadian Soldiers after a Remembrance Service in Victoria, British Columbia

TRH attend a Remembrance Sunday service in Victoria

8th November 2009

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall today attended a Remembrance Sunday service in Victoria, British Columbia, to commemorate Canada's war dead.

In bright autumn sunshine, The Prince and The Duchess arrived and took their seats in the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral.

Canadians who have died fighting in the First and Second World Wars and in the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan were remembered.

During the service a trumpeter played the Last Post which was followed by two minutes' silence.

In his sermon the Bishop of Columbia, the Right Reverend James Cowan, praised those who had died to preserve the freedom of others: "Men and women of the armed services who have served and died in the two great wars of the 20th century, in numerous UN peace keeping operations, in the Korean and Vietnamese police actions and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The service of men and women for the freedoms of others and their death in that service are remembered as sacrificial deaths.

"And as we remember their acts of sacrifice we pray that we might be inspired and equipped to be instruments of peace."

During the service The Prince and The Duchess unveiled a plaque to dedicate two new stained glass windows at the cathedral.

Following the Remembrance Day event TRH left the place of worship and greeted around 200 people who were lining the streets.

The Prince and The Duchess spent time shaking hands and talking, and The Duchess made friends with a four-legged friend - a Jack Russell called Shelby.

His owner Jane Pyke, from Victoria, said she was delighted to have met The Duchess and added: "When I told Camilla my dog was called Shelby she bent down and said 'Hello Shelby' and said she had three others just like mine at home."
