TRH meet the Polish community in London ahead of their Central Europe tour

24th February 2010

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall met leading members of London's Polish community today ahead of their visit to the country.

Second World War veterans, second and third generation Polish schoolchildren and members of the latest wave of immigrants met The Prince and his wife, The Duchess of Cornwall, as they toured the Polish Social and Cultural Association.

Their Royal Highnesses toured the centre in Hammersmith, West London – at the heart of the capital's Polish community - and watched musical and drama performances by youngsters.

Members of the centre demonstrated to The Prince and The Duchess the important contribution Poles made to the UK during the 20th Century, with a group of children explaining to the royal couple an exhibition about the Battle of Britain which featured Polish fighter pilots.

Second World War veterans - some who had fought at the famous battle of Monte Cassino in Italy - also met Their Royal Highnesses.

The Prince and The Duchess were joined by the Polish Ambassador, Barbara Tuge-Erecinska, during the visit, which was a precursor for their trip to Warsaw next month.

The Ambassador said: "The visit was very much appreciated by the Polish community in London and Britain.

"The Prince was very much interested in the contribution that the Polish community have made over the years and the contribution of the young Poles who have come to this country over the last five years."
