TRH visit Wiltshire on The Duchess of Cornwall's 60th birthday
17th July 2007
The Duchess of Cornwall celebrated her 60th birthday today with a visit to Bromham in Wiltshire with The Prince of Wales.
On a tour of the village, which has a population of around 1,900, Their Royal Highnesses were shown the newly-restored medieval ceiling at St Nicholas Church.
They then visited the village's Methodist chapel, the local shop, post office, butcher and pub. At the post office, The Duchess remarked: "I could draw my pension from here now."
There was also time to plant an oak tree, visit an array of stalls set up by villagers and play a round of short mat bowls.
Afterwards, The Duchess, dressed in a pale gold jacket and white pleated skirt, cut an iced fruit cake, bearing the words "Happy Birthday - 60", made for her by the local Women's Institute, with The Prince of Wales lighting the candles.
Her Royal Highness is a member of the Women’s Institute branch in Tetbury, near Highgrove.
As children from a local nursery sang "Happy Birthday, dear Duchess", The Prince of Wales turned impromptu conductor, pumping his arms and smiling to encourage all those gathered to join in despite the rain.
Their Royal Highnesses were visiting Bromham to celebrate its new status as the West of England's Calor Village of the Year 2006/7.
After unveiling an oak plaque to mark the visit, The Prince travelled alone to Leighterton in Gloucestershire to celebrate the centenary of the village primary school.
