The Duchess of Cormwall visits Hampshire

13th December 2012

Duchess of Cornwall signs the visitor's book during a visit to Cunard's cruise ship Queen Victoria at Southampton docks where she attended a lunch in support of The Prince's Trust

Duchess of Cornwall signs the visitor's book during a visit to Cunard's cruise ship Queen Victoria at Southampton docks where she attended a lunch in support of The Prince's Trust

The Duchess of Cornwall has bought two toy boxes as Christmas presents for her grandchildren while visiting a homelessness charity.

During a day of visits in Hampshire, she toured the Emmaus centre in Winchester before visiting the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at Southampton General Hospital and attending the fifth anniversary celebrations of the cruise liner Queen Victoria at Southampton where a new portrait of her was unveiled.

In her role as Patron of the Emmaus homelessness charity, The Duchess toured its centre in Winchester, which provides living accommodation and a furniture restoration area where the residents can learn new skills.

From the centre's shop The Duchess bought two toy boxes, one pink and one blue, which she said were for her grandchildren.

During the visit she met Terry Waite, who is the UK Emmaus chairman, and was also presented with a tennis table bat in the recreation area.

The Duchess said: "I love coming to all the Emmauses, you go in and there's the most wonderful atmosphere, it really is very positive."

Emmaus Communities enable people to move on from homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment.

The Duchess, in her role as the president of the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) went on to visit doctors, nurses and patients in a dedicated centre at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Her mother, Rosalind Shand, died in 1994 at the age of 72 as a result of osteoporosis and her grandmother died from the same condition eight years earlier.

Her Royal Highness has been President of the NOS since 2001 having previously been its Patron since 1997.

The Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit is part of the university of Southampton and conducts research into preventable causes of common chronic disorders such as osteoporosis, which leads to debilitating broken bones and affects one in two women and one in five men aged over 50 in the UK.

The official portrait of the Duchess, painted by Richard Stone, was unveiled as she visited the Queen Victoria, which was marking its fifth birthday at Southampton cruise liner terminal.

The painting, commissioned by Cunard, is a three-quarter length portrait showing The Duchess seated and wearing a cream suit. It is to be displayed in the grand lobby of the Queen Victoria which The Duchess named in December 2007.

Mr Stone, who has painted most of the Royal Family over the past three decades, said: "It is a great privilege to be able to step, for a brief time, into the lives of others.

"Everyone has the most remarkable story to tell.

"It's an honour to be in a situation where the sitter trusts me enough to allow me, through their portrait, to tell some of that story."

Peter Shanks, Cunard's president and managing director, said: "Queen Victoria is very much The Duchess's ship and we are honoured that she continues to display such an interest in the ship and her crew.

"Tradition is very important to us at Cunard and I am delighted we are able to continue this fine tradition of specially-commissioned royal portraits for our ships."

During the visit, which is The Duchess's third to the ship, she met 12 young adults who are taking part in Cunard's joint programme with The Prince's Trust to gain experience in the customer service industry.  The Prince's Trust was set up by her husband The Prince of Wales in 1976.

The Duchess also visited the ship's gingerbread village display.

And, along with Queen Victoria's madrina - shipyard sponsor - Maureen Ryan, The Duchess cut a cake in the shape of the vessel to mark the liner's anniversary.

She also met some of the ship's distinguished guests, including former and present BBC newsreaders Michael Buerk and Nicholas Owen and actor Colin Salmon.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall celebrate the best of Welsh culture during annual Summer visit to Wales

Published on 19th June 2013

1st – 5th July 2013

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will celebrate the best of Welsh culture, come face to face with the TARDIS and continue to highlight the excellent work being done by their charities during their annual summer visit to Wales.

As Patron of the ‘Dylan Thomas 100’ Festival, The Prince of Wales, with The Duchess, will mark Dylan Thomas’s centenary year by visiting the boat house in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire where he wrote many of his major works. The Duchess will visit the largest independent publishing house in Wales, Gomer Press, and Their Royal Highnesses will promote sustainable Welsh food and local sourcing by visiting the Rhug Estate Farm Shop in Denbighshire and the Farmer’s Co-operative in Treharris, Merthyr Tydfil.

A highlight of the week will be a visit by Their Royal Highnesses to the set of BBC One drama ‘Doctor Who’ in Cardiff to mark the programme’s 50th anniversary. The Prince and The Duchess will meet the Doctor, played by actor Matt Smith, his companion Clara, played by Jenna Coleman and some of his most famous adversaries at the home of BBC Cymru Wales drama, Roath Lock studios.

Once again their annual summer visit will be an opportunity for the couple to highlight the work of their charities. The Prince of Wales will open a new Prince’s Trust Cymru headquarters in Cardiff and will tour Coed Darcy, a regeneration project in Neath, South Wales which The Prince’s Foundation for Building Community has worked on.

The Duchess of Cornwall, Patron of the charity Emmaus, will visit one of their shops in Porthcawl which raises money to help formerly homeless people. Her Royal Highness will then tour the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre in Swansea, as well as the city’s Loans and Savings Abertawe Credit Union.

A Clarence House spokesman said: ‘The Prince and The Duchess always enjoy their annual visit to Wales and this year they are looking forward to a varied programme of engagements including everything from Dylan Thomas’s Boat House to Doctor Who’s TARDIS! Their Royal Highnesses are also keen to highlight the vital work being done across Wales by some of the charities they are involved with.’

During Wales Week, The Prince and The Duchess will stay at their Welsh home ‘Llwynywermod’ near Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, where Their Royal Highnesses will host a folk evening and where The Duchess will hold a tea party for children involved with Dreams and Wishes – a charity which supports seriously ill children.

Other notable engagements during Wales Week include the Welsh launch - at Ebbw Fawr Learning Centre, Gwent - of ‘Teach First’, a charity which places top graduates in schools, and a visit to ‘The Prince of Wales’ Inn in Kenfig, which has been at the heart of the local community for over 500 years.

Their Royal Highnesses attend the annual Garter Service

18th June 2013

The Prince of Wales, The Queen and The Duke of Cambridge at the Garter Service, Windsor Castle

The Prince of Wales, The Queen and The Duke of Cambridge at the Garter Service, Windsor Castle

The Queen was joined members of her family and senior figures for the annual Garter ceremony in the castle grounds at Windsor today.

The service was preceded by the procession of members of the Order of the Garter.

In a touching change with tradition, The Queen, who would normally walk with The Duke of Edinburgh, was flanked by The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Cambridge.

With The Prince on her right and her grandson on her left, she smiled as she walked towards St George's chapel for the service.

Wearing their blue velvet robes and black velvet hats with white plumes, the Royal Garter Knights walked past the thousands of spectators gathered in the grounds of the castle.

Other members of the monarchy who are also Royal Knights or Ladies of the Order and took part in the procession were The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, and The Earl of Wessex.

The Duchess of Cornwall and The Countess of Wessex watched the procession from the vantage point of the Galilee Porch at St George's Chapel as their partners processed past.

The Queen is sovereign of the order and a number of other British and foreign royals are additional knights of the order.

New appointments are announced on St. George's Day but the chivalric and installation ceremonies take place on the Monday of Royal Ascot week, known as Garter Day.

The former head of the UK's Armed Forces Air Chief Marshal Lord Stirrup was invested by The Queen in the Castle's Garter throne room, and later installed as a Knight Companion during the service in St George's Chapel. Recipients of the honour are chosen because they have held public office, contributed to national life or served the sovereign personally. The appointment of Knights of the Garter is in The Queen's gift and is made without consulting ministers.

Other members of the order include former prime minister Sir John Major, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, a past president of the Supreme Court, and Admiral Lord Boyce, a former head of the UK's Armed Forces.

During the service hymns were sung and prayers said for the Order of the Garter.

The Queen was the first to leave the service and she was joined in her carriage by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

They drove past squadrons of the Household Cavalry's Life Guards and Blues and Royals who lined the route. Following soon behind were The Count and Countess of Wessex, sitting opposite The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of York in their carriage.

The crowds cheered as the Royals passed and they were soon joined in the castle by members of the congregation for afternoon tea.

The Prince, President of Business in the Community, meets local and national business leaders and the first Business Connectors in Middlesbrough

The Prince, President of Business in the Community, meets local and national business leaders and the first Business Connectors in Middlesbrough

An introduction by The Prince of Wales:

All of my efforts over the past forty years have been concerned essentially with one central principle - the well-being of the individual. Not the isolated individual. My emphasis has constantly been on the individual within community. People do not thrive without the support of a community so, in my view, if the hope is that people prosper, find happiness and feel that all important sense of satisfaction and belonging, then we have to maintain the fabric of community and not let it become threadbare.

In this film I wanted to demonstrate the role that business has to play in that process of nurturing community, not just in the UK but around the world - hence my Youth Business International charity. This film gives examples of the work done by such organisations. To demonstrate what I mean it visits the work of Business in the Community. As with Scottish Business in the Community, I have been Patron of BITC for over 25 years.

The film explains the 'Business Connector' scheme which I hope will soon become a nationwide scheme. It takes people from big business with top class business skills and parachutes them into the heart of run down areas to give those who are striving to regenerate their communities the sorts of skills and connections that they would not otherwise have access to.

The film also features Business in the Community's "Ready For Work" programme which gives those who find themselves homeless the sorts of skills and understanding they need to get back into the world of work. The programme involves representatives from big business acting as mentors to those who are homeless, teaching them techniques for building confidence and enabling them to benefit from periods of work experience. The results of all these schemes are truly moving.

The film also explains the brilliant achievements of my charities, Prime and Prime Cymru, which help those people who find themselves suddenly unemployed and over the age of fifty. I have long been concerned that such people find it very difficult to find work and yet they have acquired a great range of skills and experience that are too precious to be just thrown away.

I felt it was madness, in fact, so I devised PRIME, The Prince's Initiative for Mature Enterprise. It helps such people to establish their own enterprises or businesses. What is fascinating to me is how these businesses then fare in the long term. Many more survive than their equivalents set up by younger people, which says much about the value of experience and mature wisdom!

The film also features a charity very close to my heart. In Kind Direct gathers unwanted but brand new goods from manufacturers and major retailers and then distributes them to thousands of charities, thus relieving those charities of the costs they would otherwise incur. So far, as you will see, since I set it up in 1996, In Kind Direct has distributed more than £130million worth of goods.
