The Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust – Bart's story
The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA) based in North Mymms, Hertfordshire was first established in 1986 and is one of the largest veterinary teaching hospitals in the UK.
The Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust of which The Duchess is Patron, helps to fund the work of the QMHA. The Hospital receives approximately 8,000 patients annually, working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to take emergencies and referrals from practices all over the country.
Bart, a 15-month-old cat, was run over by a car. Both his shoulder blades were dislocated resulting in one of his legs becoming paralysed.
As a result of the accident, Bart also developed a chest and skin infection and lost a large amount of skin.
Over three weeks the staff at the (QMHA) helped Bart through a number of surgeries and blood transfusions.
He required intensive nursing throughout and had his leg amputated, but incredibly he pulled through.
Although Bart showed his gratitude with the odd bite, and an uncanny ability to get out of bandages without moving, he is grateful to all the staff without whom, he wouldn’t have been able to come home to his friend Libby.
A year on he is a happy cat, hopping around on his three legs at great speed and learning how to play with his toys again.
