Education

The Duke of Cambridge attended Mrs Mynor’s Nursery School in West London from 24th September 1985, aged three.  While he was there, The Duke acted in two nursery school plays, attended by his parents and younger brother Prince Harry, and also sang a musical solo.

From the age of four, The Duke attended Wetherby School, also in West London, from 15th January 1987 until 5th July 1990. It was noted that he had a flair for English and spelling. Sports Day was held annually at Richmond Athletic Ground and both The Prince and Princess of Wales took part in parents’ races.

His Royal Highness proved himself to be a stylish swimmer and entered the school gala held every March. At the age of seven, he won the Grunfield Cup awarded to the boy with the best overall swimming style. The Duke sang in the 1987, 1988 and 1989 Christmas concerts, and took part in the June 1990 school play.

His Royal Highness spent five years at Ludgrove School in Berkshire, from 10th September 1990 until 5th July 1995.

On 3rd June, 1991, The Duke was admitted to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, after an accident at Ludgrove.  Playing with a friend on the putting green, he was hit on the side of the head with a golf club. He suffered a depressed fracture of the forehead but was not knocked out. His Royal Highness was transferred by ambulance to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and that evening underwent an operation.

In June 1995, The Prince of Wales and his elder son took part in Ludgrove’s father-and-son clay pigeon shooting competition. In July 1995, The Princess of Wales and The Duke, who was aged 13 at the time, played in the mother-and-son tennis competition at Ludgrove School.

The Duke of Cambridge attended Eton College, Windsor from September 1995 to June 2000.

From June 1999, The Duke held a number of responsibilities in the school. These included Secretary of the Agricultural Society, reflecting his strong interest in the countryside, Joint Keeper (captain) of Swimming, House Captain of Games and, in April 2000, House Captain.  He was also one of 21 prefects, known at Eton as being in ‘Pop’.

The Duke also acted on stage and took a small part as an Attendant Lord in Shakespeare's The Tempest which was performed by his House at Eton on 27th February 1998 before The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

He was accepted at the University of St Andrews on a four year course to study a Master of Arts (Honours) in Art History degree.  He began his degree in September 2001 after his gap year.

During their education, The Prince of Wales asked the media to respect the privacy of both of his sons, to allow them to lead a normal school life.

Throughout his university education, The Duke gave interviews to the media and photographs were regularly released as part of an ongoing agreement with the media.

On June 23rd 2005, The Duke graduated with a 2:1 Master of Arts (Honours) in Geography after four years of study at St Andrews University in Scotland.  Click here to read more about Prince William's time at university.
