Centrepoint - Jason’s story
Home for Jason meant a mattress in a dilapidated van. He had no qualifications and no hopes for the future. An interest in music led him to Centrepoint where he now has the support to develop his music career.
My mum was a crack addict who walked out and left me with my step-dad when I was six. I constantly argued with my new step-mum and eventually got expelled from four schools. The final straw was when I stole some money from home. Things felt so bad that I decided to leave. I was fifteen and crashed with mates for a couple of years.
When I ran out of options I got a van and fitted it out with a mattress or squatted to get a roof over my head. In the beginning I had no direction and didn’t want anything out of life. Smoking weed gets you clouded. You don’t think about things. I was just living for the moment.
I tried living with my mum when I was seventeen but got into trouble with the police. My step-dad urged me to turn my life around before it was too late. So I looked into a music college course and got put in touch with Centrepoint. I have been here for nearly a year now. Centrepoint have helped me sort myself out. I got some counselling for my depression and lots of support with practical things.
I have turned my experiences into lyrics for my music: ‘Centrepoint gave me the strength I need to succeed/ The strength I need to believe without weed/The help to get me back on trax/And now I bring truth to the booth/Now I’m back on trax’.
