Tusk Trust - Northern Rangelands Trust
The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is a community-led initiative supported by the Tusk Trust that brings together communities, the private sector, government and other organisations with an interest in wildlife conservation, community development and poverty alleviation in Northern Kenya.
The NRT enables the development of a number of programmes, many of which have been directly funded by Tusk to collectively manage ecosystems and to improve livelihoods and biodiversity conservation.
The NRT uses a holistic approach to economic development and conservation.
Tusk has funded a range of activities, including the building of roads, bridges, air strips, schools, clinics and water boreholes, the supply of vehicles, and the training and employment of game scouts.
The successes of the Tusk supported projects such as Il Ngwesi and the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust established in 1995, have demonstrated the real benefits that wildlife conservation can bring to their communities.
Both communities have created flourishing eco-tourism businesses and seen habitat and wildlife populations regenerate dramatically thanks to the security provided by their own scouts.
NRT projects now benefit over 62,000 people across several communities in Northern Kenya.
Tusk has been at the forefront of providing the necessary support for these efforts and is now investing significant funds to enable similar development amongst the Lekerruki, Ltungai and Sera communities.
