Arts & Business - 'Discovery at Snape' training days
Barclays and Aldeburgh Productions (AP) have had two very successful years working together on various projects and sponsorships. So when Barclays identified a need within their organisation for teams at all levels to communicate better and work together more they turned to AP to deliver a bespoke corporate professional development programme.
Aldeburgh Productions is a world-renowned meeting place for artists, students, audiences and academics. It is responsible for a year-round arts programme encompassing music and related artforms and it also manages Snape Maltings Concert Hall.
With funding from Arts & Business New Partners, Aldeburgh Productions developed and delivered two music based corporate professional training days in close consultation with Barclays.
An initial preparation day was held at Snape Maltings to discuss what was involved in a ‘development through music’ session and what objectives Barclays wanted to fulfil. This provided the basis for the Discovery at Snape training days.
The day began with a historical tour of Snape Maltings Concert Hall followed by a performance from the CLS musicians before the participants began creating their own music.
They observed how the musicians share leadership and adopt roles according to the task, discuss and resolve problems or differences of opinion and commit to a single vision to produce a convincing performance, all qualities which are key to business success.
Facilitated discussions throughout the day, led by the musicians themselves, were a key element in enhancing the learning experience and relating it to the workplace.
A number of senior Barclays directors and manager evaluated the programme with Aldeburgh Productions and the CLS musicians with an overwhelming consensus that the day had been a great success.
The employees from Barclays were asked to rate each module of the day which resulted in an average 95 per cent of the participants scoring the day as good or excellent. One said: “It was so different and a really fun day but still got the message across – much better than ‘chalk and talk’.“
The pilot Discovery Days proved to AP that they have an excellent opportunity to develop a very successful arts based professional training model.
With a truly unique venue at their disposal, this new activity will enable them to forge new relationships with businesses, local authorities and other organisations to create a new income stream.
