Dominic Joire runs the Gateway Health Clinic in South London. Gateway won an Award for Good Practice in Integrated Health in 2003.
“The Gateway Clinic is at the moment the only specialist traditional Chinese medicine clinic in the NHS. All the patients are referred by their GP and it is totally integrated healthcare between Lambeth PCT and the Chinese medicine clinic.
We see approximately 400 patients per week and they are all referred to us by their doctors.
Through the development of the clinic over the past 15 years, we’re now working essentially with long term conditions.
Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture seem to give an answer for long-term conditions - not the answer - but one of the answers.
80 per cent of our patients have a long-term condition. Allopathic medicine and complementary therapies come together in a cost effective and efficient way.
We very strongly believe in empowering the patient. It’s very important for people with long-tern conditions.
A big part of the treatment here is about educating them, empowering them, managing the pain and managing their health.”
