The Prince's Trust - Kynda Carter, Simply Staircases, Hertford
Kynda Carter is the 2006 winner of the RBS Enterprise Award at the Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success Awards.
Kynda, 28, had many issues at school and got into a spiral of offending and dependency, resulting in a custodial sentence. Whilst serving his sentence, he discovered his talent for carpentry in a prison workshop.
Upon release, he approached The Prince’s Trust and received a start-up loan and grant to assist him in developing his business of making pine beds and specialist staircases.
Kynda said: “Prior to going to prison and hearing of the Princes Trust I genuinely just drifted through my life from there to there with no direction and ended up in prison. When I was in prison I knew that I didn’t want to go back there and I knew was worth more to myself than that so I decided that I had to do something rather than just continue to go through life with no direction.
“To have my own business, be able to work for myself and to have what I have got gives me a lot of satisfaction and a lot of self-worth.
“I have got the opportunity to retire one day, I have got the opportunity there to have my own house, to have the comforts of life that you can earn legally without having to worry and look over my shoulder.
“If it weren’t for the Prince’s Trust I would be getting up in the morning not really knowing what to do. Now I get up in the morning and I know exactly what I have got to do.”
