The Prince's Trust - Shenica Williamson, Young Achiever of the Year 2006

At the age of 15, Shenica was placed in the care of her grandparents. Having to witness the constant arguments and violence between her alcoholic parents, Shenica experienced a childhood of fear and anxiety.

As a result, Shenica became withdrawn but was temporarily able to escape the trauma while at school. However, Shenica’s life was made unbearable when she became a victim of school bullying on a regular basis, struggling to keep out of sight for fear of reprisal. Her self-confidence deteriorated further, she lost all self -esteem and motivation, rarely left the house and withdrew from society.

Shenica’s grandparents grew more and more concerned and turned to Sure Start who referred Shenica to a Prince’s Trust Personal Adviser.

Shenica’s Personal Adviser built rapport and trust until Shenica began to regain her confidence and self -belief, bravely agreeing to visit colleges and training programmes. As part of The Prince's Trust ongoing support, a job search revealed an ideal position and Shenica was then encouraged to apply and undertake an NVQ to become qualified in working with young children and the elderly. Through confidence building and advocacy on her behalf, Shenica gained employment with Value Care (an established provider of care services) and is now fully qualified.

Shenica is embarking on a promising career in community care. She has been employed with Value Care for the past 20 months and despite the early start and occasionally long hours, she has excelled at the job.

Having previously felt trapped in situations over which she had no control, Shenica enjoys and values her freedom, and no longer feels afraid. She has a wide circle of friends and has demonstrated real strength of character in overcoming the barriers she has faced.

Shenica went on to win the Young Achiever Award at The Prince’s Trust & RBS Celebrate Success Awards. Shenica was presented with her award by The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Trust ambassador Pierce Brosnan.
