Initiatives
Mosaic
Mosaic’s mission is to create opportunities for young people - championed by Muslims and harnessing the power of positive thinking.
Mosaic works towards a more integrated and thriving society where all individuals, regardless of background, are supported in realizing their potential.
Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales and convened in November 2007 by Business in the Community, one of The Prince’s Charities, to challenge the growing concern around the issues facing young Muslims living in deprived areas of Britain.
In a 2008 speech, The Prince outlined the reason for setting up Mosaic:
"The objective has been quite simple and straightforward: to extend a helping hand to those members of our Muslim communities who need it, and together with our other diverse communities, about whom I happen to care a great deal."
To achieve this, Mosaic aims to:
- Stimulate greater levels of volunteering through a network of partners and directly;
- Nurture and promote talent in Muslim communities, providing positive role models to young Muslims and their peers in society;
- Promote leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement whilst addressing key social issues of social importance in the UK and beyond.
Today Mosaic operates nationally in London, the West Midlands, East Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber, and the North West as a set of initiatives championed by Muslims aimed at raising aspirations and providing opportunities. There is also growing international support for the scheme.
Mosaic Programmes
- The Mentoring Programme is an important part of Mosaic and works with primary schools, secondary schools and muslim young offenders to support and empower young people;
- The Media Network brings together media professionals to inspire young Muslims to consider it as a profession, supports communities in telling their stories, and offers networking opportunities;
- The Speakers Bureau offers a wide range of inspiring Muslim role models that can be called upon by community groups, schools, media and others to speak on a variety of subjects.
- The International Summit brings together interested parties and support from international individuals and organisations, and has several partners in countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The summit has proved to be an innovative leadership development opportunity, and is designed to bring together young emerging leaders from across the Muslim world.
