A speech by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall at a conference to mark 75 years of the Brooke Hospital for Animals, St James’s Palace State Apartments, London

28th October 2009

As the very proud President of the Brooke Hospital for Animals I am very honoured to host today’s conference and to join you in celebrating its 75th anniversary.

The Brooke is a cause close to my heart and I am delighted to see that the legacy of Dorothy Brooke continues to go from strength to strength. And I am delighted to see her grandson, grand-daughter and great grand-daughter are all here today.

I remember years ago my father telling me, he was serving in Cairo as a Cavalry officer during the war. He was desperately worried about all the horses and I think that sparked my interest in the Brooke hospital.

It has been a true inspiration to be part of the awards today and to meet the people who are helping in so many vital ways to alleviate the daily suffering of these working horses, donkeys and mules – in an ever increasing number of countries.

So I’d just like to thank you all for your continued support and commitment to the Brooke’s work and to wish you every success in the future.

Again thank you very much for everything you do for it and I shall endeavour to do everything I can in the future.
