Marks & Spencer’s Plan A combines performance improvement with cultural change in a comprehensive and inspirational long term vision to become the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015.

True integration is seen in performance metrics linking commercial success to sustainability throughout the business. Stakeholder engagement is extensive and ongoing and last year Plan A generated £70m net financial benefit.

To date, 105 of the 180 Plan A Commitments have been achieved.


Business benefits

Plan A has generated £70 million for the company. To date M&S has achieved 105 of the 180 Plan A commitments including improved energy efficiency of 23% and reduced carbon emissions of 13% (or over 100,000 tonnes of CO2e). M&S has reduced waste by 34% and achieved recycling levels of over 98%. These metrics spell out environmental impact and the financial savings and benefits illustrate why support exists throughout the business.

Social benefits

M&S has helped customers donate over 10 million garments to Oxfam and engaged them in the Big Butterfly Count, Forever Fish (the marine conservation programme), Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and Breakthrough Breast Cancer activities. M&S last year provided training to over 37,000 supply chain workers and held over 20 ethical trading conferences.
