A message from The Prince of Wales to President Mukherjee following the floods in State of Uttarakhand

Published on 15th July 2013

Having learned of the terrible flooding and landslides in the state of Uttarakhand, I just wanted to express my profound sympathies and those of my wife to the people of India at this most difficult of times.

I can only begin to imagine the despair of those who have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones in such a devastating catastrophe. Even in these difficult circumstances, however, I have heard of communities coming together to support each other and of the incredible rescue efforts from both the military and volunteers to evacuate and assist victims in the most remote areas.

In this regard, it was particularly heartbreaking to hear of those brave rescue workers who lost their lives in carrying out their duty. You will be only too aware of the feelings of compassion and commiseration for India from around the world that this disaster has generated, perhaps not least because so many countries are themselves having to face an increased incidence of similar disasters born from, amongst other things, the unprecedented changes brought about by climate change. It seems hardly a week now passes without news of yet another catastrophe afflicting people, whether it is of flooding in Europe, storms in the United States or seemingly endless drought in parts of Africa. The need to find an integrated approach to address the underlying cause of these problems has never been more urgent and I know how hard you and your colleagues are working on these desperately difficult issues which affect so profoundly the future of mankind.

However inadequate these sentiments may be during these terrible circumstances, my wife and I wanted you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and the people of Uttarakand at this time. Charles, The Prince of Wales
