The Prince of Wales joined top UK chefs in London today to sample the delights of the first of this year’s Cambrian Mountains lamb ‘newydd’.

‘Newydd’ is the Welsh word for ‘new’ and the arrival of the first sweet, succulent lamb down from the mountains is always eagerly anticipated by locals ”“ now its reputation is spreading fast amongst foodies.

Having established his Welsh home, Llwynywermod in the area in 2008 and as a farmer himself, The Prince is committed to helping sustain rural communities in the Cambrian Mountains where agriculture and tourism are the main economic drivers.

As President of the Cambrian Mountains Initiative, His Royal Highness has also provided a special watercolour for use in the bilingual Cambrian Mountains brand identity. The watercolour is of Cwm Berwyn in the Cambrian Mountains.

Cambrian Mountains lamb is part of a farmer’s marketing venture, inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales. A group of 21 upland farming families have joined together to sell their delicious mountain meat to a wider audience throughout the UK.

Seasonal Cambrian Mountains lamb meat comes from special, native breeds that are traditionally farmed in ‘hefted’ flocks on farm-assured farms that use the old Welsh ‘Hafod and Hendre’ system.
