It hardly seems possible that it is now thirty-seven years since Papua New Guinea gained its independence an occasion at which I was honoured to represent The Queen. I can still vividly recall the first raising of the National Flag in Port Moresby on the morning of 16th September 1975, the first State Opening of Parliament later that morning and the splendid ceremony at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium which marked the installation of Papua New Guinea’s first Governor-General. It was a most moving and historic occasion.

I need hardly say how delighted my wife and I will be to pay an Official Visit next month to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen of Papua New Guinea. We are both greatly looking forward to experiencing the wonderful, culture and hospitality of Papua New Guinea, which I remember so well from my previous visits all those years ago.

Na nau, mi laik salim bikpela amamas bilong mi, na ol famili bilong mi, i go long ologeta man, meri, na pikinini long Independent State of Papua New Guinea.
