It seems to me that every young person, wherever they live, deserves a chance to succeed – and that when that chance is given, we all share in the dividend.  With your support, we can offer such a chance to even more young people in Greece and empower them to play their part in shaping the future of their country and their society.

What started as a modest initiative has, I am proud to say, flourished into an organization that has had a positive impact on the lives of so many people and communities right across South Asia. This, of course, has been entirely due, Ladies and Gentlemen, to your continuing generosity and support.  

As your President, I’m delighted that our wines will have an even higher profile in this country and abroad. As you all know, our wine-makers make a huge contribution to tourism in this country.

As well as being a time for reflection, Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity for us all to consider how we may make a difference today. So many of our communities around the country are exploring how they can be more welcoming to others fleeing oppression or how they can challenge contemporary forms of prejudice.

Congratulations to everyone at the university on being named Scottish University of the Year for 2019. You are riding high and exciting developments are taking place all the time.

I am most touched to have been asked to provide a foreword for this important publication.  ‘The Darkest Dawn’ is a deeply poignant tribute to all those who so tragically lost their lives when H.M.Y. IOLAIRE sank a century ago, in the early hours of 1st January 1919.

Time and again I have been deeply humbled and profoundly moved by the extraordinary grace and capacity for forgiveness that I have seen in those who have suffered so much.

Over the decades Australia House has become a symbol of the unique relationship between Australia and Britain, through good times and bad, and as vital members of our Commonwealth Family of Nations.

The small steps we have taken towards a circular economy will need to become giant strides if we are to achieve the required changes before time runs out.

I’m sure that Queen Charlotte would have been delighted to welcome you all to her home and to see that today, 250 years later, at least as many girls as boys take part in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.
