Andy Gillies, Apprentice Commis Chef
"In 2011, I spent 2 years at college and a year at university all to no avail; I tried a variety of jobs, none of which gave me any fulfilment or progression.
"I applied for and was lucky enough to get onto a Prince’s Trust ‘Get Into Cooking’ programme run in Kilmarnock.
"Unfortunately having completed the five week training it didn’t lead to any positive outcomes and I found myself once again unemployed. Living close to Dumfries House I decided to contact the Head Chef Darren Blunden and asked if I could work for him for free to gain experience.
"After two weeks working with Darren I was offered the opportunity to do a Modern Apprenticeship which has changed my life. I am now working towards industry standard qualifications and gaining experience working under an amazing Chef.
"Without Dumfries House and the support of The Prince’s Trust I would still be unemployed with no prospects. I am very grateful to Dumfries House and to The Prince’s Trust for the opportunities I have been given and the training I am getting."
