Leila Dear MA student at the Prince’s School

Leila Dear is a recent graduate of the Traditional Arts MA programme.

Leila came to The Prince’s School after travel and study in China, which sparked her interest in the various crafts and sacred art traditions she encountered there.

Leila chose to study at The Prince’s School as she felt the MA offered a unique practical and philosophical approach to art. In particular she considered the traditionalist ethos of The Prince’s School offered a challenging and welcome alternative to other art institutions she had attended.

During her two years of study she had the opportunity to develop skills in ceramics, stained glass, traditional geometry and the composition of Arabesques, as well as experiencing the range of traditional art modules offered on the course.

Leila felt the intensive mode of study allowed her to experience an integrated understanding of the principles underlying traditional art. She was particularly inspired by the universal expression of geometric order in nature and traditional arts.

Leila’s final project for the July 2012 degree show explored the phenomena of Cymatics, or visible sound. The sound waves were made visible using a Chladni Plate and Oscilloscope.

Leila interpreted visual representations of waveforms through her understanding of geometry in order to produce ceramic tiles, which were used to make a decorative fountain.

Of her time at The Prince’s School, Leila says: “The subjects we have studied on the course have set me on a path for a sincere lifetime commitment to art and its educative value. The sources and expressions of traditional art are inexhaustible and an inspiration for my life and work.”
