Graham Goldup Subject Leader for Geography
I first got involved with the PTI in 2008, when I attended the first PTI Summer School for Geography at Cambridge.
The experience was outstanding, and with the privilege of listening to renowned speakers such as Michael Palin, Helen Sharman and Sir Crispin Tickell, I went back to school full of ideas to ‘raise the bar’ for my Geography students!
Some of the key programmes included:
- Establishing links with schools in Tanzania and Senegal, giving our students the opportunity to interact with pupils in Africa and develop a first hand understanding of physical and environmental issues, in a cultural and social context different to their own
- Engaging celebrity speakers including Jake Meyer, mountaineer, and Simon Reeve, BBC travel presenter, who came to school and inspired budding Geographers (Jake Meyer is the youngest man in the world to climb the Seven Summits, and also spoke at the PTI 2010 Geography Summer School)
- Enriching environmental learning on both a micro and macro level our students participated locally in the Engaging Places Project to understand why and how the Lanes in Brighton have changed over time. They also interacted with the global expedition project, Atlantic Rising, teaching them to consider implications of change for local areas, as well as for the whole planet.
Working with The Prince’s Teaching Institute has not only developed my own Geographical subject knowledge and classroom rigour, it has also provided me with an exciting professional development opportunity working alongside like-minded individuals, who are passionate about our subject. Being an ardent Geographer, today I am engaged with the development of the PTI’s Geography programme and am also leading the PTI Geography Subject Days programme in 2012, for newly qualified teachers to develop their subject knowledge and classroom practice.
